Townleap

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Canadian passport

The passport is quietly powerful. The tax exit is the hard part.

Canadians don't usually think of themselves as immigrants β€” until they try to stay somewhere longer than a snowbird season. This page pulls the routes Townleap tracks for Canadian passport holders, pairs them with the cities where those paths land, and flags the CRA traps that follow you across borders.

Common bottlenecks

  • CRA worldwide-income taxation: Canada taxes residents on global income, and departure tax on deemed dispositions can surprise you on the way out
  • Provincial healthcare portability: each province has its own residency requirement and waiting period β€” lose coverage faster than you expect
  • No EU free movement β€” every European country requires a separate visa, same as Americans

What changes for this passport

Working Holiday Visas β€” Canada's passport superpower

Canada has bilateral WHV agreements with 36+ countries. Most let you live and work for 1–2 years, no employer needed, age cap usually 35.

Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Ireland, the UK (Tier 5 Youth Mobility), and a dozen more. Americans don't get most of these. The catch: it's a one-time use per country, and the age cutoff is real. Use it strategically β€” it's the cheapest door into a country you'll ever get.

Portugal D8 (Digital Nomad Visa)

moderate4-7 mo

The go-to EU entry for Canadian remote workers. No employer needed, path to citizenship in 5 years.

Income must come from outside Portugal. Lisbon and Porto are the obvious landing cities. The 5-year citizenship track with no language requirement until the final application makes this the most efficient EU passport play for Canadians willing to wait.

The CRA departure tax

Leave Canada and the CRA treats it like you sold everything. Deemed disposition on departure can generate a surprise tax bill.

When you cease Canadian tax residency, the CRA deems you to have disposed of most capital property at fair market value. That means unrealized capital gains on stocks, crypto, and non-registered investments get taxed β€” even though you didn't sell anything. Your RRSP and TFSA survive departure (RRSP stays tax-deferred, TFSA stays tax-free in Canada but may be taxable in your new country). Principal residence is exempt. File a T1 departure return and consider an independent tax advisor before you cut ties.

Read it like a triage board

The city list below is not a promise that every route fits every profession. It is the strongest city-level shortlist we can build from the passport-specific paths Townleap already tracks.

Each card shows the visa route that makes the city reachable from this passport today, then pairs it with Townleap’s livability data so you can decide whether the bureaucracy buys you a city worth settling in.
