🇩🇪 Germany Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card)
Germany will grade your life on a point system — and you'll thank them for it
Germany's Chancenkarte launched in June 2024 as a points-based job-seeker visa for non-EU skilled workers. No job offer required — just a recognized degree, some language skills, and at least 6 points on their spreadsheet of human worth. You get up to a year to find qualified employment, with part-time work allowed to keep you fed while you navigate the Ausländerbehörde. Once you land a job, you convert to a proper work visa with a clear path to permanent residence and — since 2024 — citizenship in as few as 5 years. It's Germany's way of saying 'we need you' in the most bureaucratically rigorous way possible.
Who actually qualifies
- ✓Non-EU national with a university degree or qualified vocational training (minimum 2 years) recognized by German authorities
- ✓Pathway 1 (direct): Your qualification is fully recognized as equivalent in the Anabin database — no points needed, just paperwork
- ✓Pathway 2 (points): Score at least 6 points across qualifications, work experience, language, age, and German connections
- ✓Language gate: German A1 or English B2 minimum — you must clear this regardless of your point total
- ✓Proof of financial means: blocked account with €13,092 (€1,091/month × 12), or a part-time job contract, or a sponsor
- ✓No criminal record — Germany checks, and Germany remembers
The paperwork pile

- 📄Health insurance valid in Germany

What it'll cost you
The waiting game
Processing time
2–6 months (varies by embassy — some now accept online applications since January 2025)
Path to permanent residency
21 months with EU Blue Card + B1 German, or 3 years on a standard skilled worker visa
Path to citizenship
5 years of lawful residence (dual citizenship allowed since June 2024 — keep your old passport)
The tax situation
Once employed: progressive income tax of 14–45%, plus solidarity surcharge (5.5% on tax, but most earners are exempt below ~€73k). Church tax of 8–9% on income tax if you're a registered member — leave the church at your local Amtsgericht to avoid it. Social contributions eat another ~21% (health, pension, unemployment, care insurance). A typical skilled worker at €55k takes home about 58–62% of gross. Consider a Steuerberater unless spreadsheets bring you joy.
Bringing your person
No family reunification during the Chancenkarte job-seeking phase. After converting to a work visa, spouse can join with full work rights. Spouse needs A1 German for the family reunification visa (waived for Blue Card holders).
