🇪🇸 Spain Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)

Spain will let you live here — as long as you promise not to work

DifficultyModerate
Duration1 year (renewable in 2-year cycles)
SpousePartner cannot work on this visa

Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa is the retirement visa that isn't called a retirement visa. It's for anyone who can prove they have enough money to live in Spain without working — retirees, FIRE devotees, trust-fund beneficiaries, or anyone whose income arrives without them doing anything visible. The catch: you cannot work in Spain. At all. Not remotely, not freelance, not 'just a little consulting.' If you need to earn money, look at the DNV or Highly Qualified instead. In exchange for economic celibacy, you get a straightforward path to residency and eventually citizenship — 10 years, not 5, because Spain doesn't reward idleness as generously as Portugal.

Who actually qualifies

  • Sufficient financial means: approximately €2,400/month (IPREM × 4 = €600/month × 4) for the main applicant
  • Additional €600/month per dependent family member
  • OR: lump-sum savings equivalent to 12 months at the above rates (~€28,800+ for a single applicant)
  • No work permitted in Spain — active income (remote work, freelancing) disqualifies you
  • Private health insurance from a Spanish-authorized insurer (no co-pays, no deductibles, full coverage)
  • Clean criminal record from all countries of residence in the past 5 years
  • No previous immigration violations in Spain or the Schengen area

The paperwork pile

  • 📄National visa application form (2 copies)
  • 📄Valid passport (12+ months remaining)
  • 📄Two recent passport photos (white background, 3.5×4.5 cm)
  • 📄Criminal record certificate (apostilled/Hague) from all countries of residence in past 5 years
  • 📄Medical certificate confirming no quarantinable diseases
  • 📄Private health insurance policy from a company authorized in Spain — must cover the full stay, no co-pays
  • 📄Proof of financial means: bank statements (12 months), pension certificates, investment income documentation
  • 📄Proof of accommodation: rental contract, property deed, or notarized invitation letter
  • 📄Proof of economic means for dependents (if applicable): additional €600/month per person
