Moving to Australia from the UK

Visa paths, pension traps, healthcare gaps, and what it actually costs. For settlers, not tourists.

The furthest destination on this list, and the one with the most British-shaped hole in its culture. Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth have combined British expat populations larger than many British cities. The path in depends on your age: under 35 gets you a Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) — two years, easy. After that, you need skills Australia wants: the Skilled Independent Visa (189) is points-based and competitive. Employer sponsorship (482) is the other main route. The lifestyle is excellent. The pension situation is not — your UK state pension is frozen the day you arrive.

NHS → Local healthcare

Australia's Medicare (confusingly, same name but no relation to the US system) provides universal healthcare to citizens and permanent residents. As a visa holder, you may access Medicare under the UK-Australia Healthcare Agreement — which covers medically necessary treatment, but not elective or pre-existing conditions. Once you have PR, Medicare covers GP visits (bulk-billed or with gap payment), hospital treatment, and subsidised prescriptions via PBS. Private health insurance (A$150–400/month) is common for shorter waits and dental/optical. There is no S1 equivalent — UK pensioners don't get automatic access.

UK pension portability

This is the big one. Your UK state pension is payable in Australia — but it's frozen at the rate when you leave the UK. No annual uprating, no triple lock, no inflation adjustment. Ever. If you leave at £221.20/week, that's what you get in 20 years' time while UK residents are receiving £350+. Over a 30-year retirement, the frozen pension could cost you £50,000–£100,000 in lost uprating. There's no bilateral social security agreement that fixes this — Australia and the UK have been arguing about it for decades. QROPS transfers to Australian super funds are possible but subject to the 25% overseas transfer charge (OTC). Private DB pensions can be drawn from the UK — no withholding if you register non-resident status with HMRC.

Tax residency & double taxation

Australia taxes residents on worldwide income at progressive rates (19–45% plus 2% Medicare levy). The UK-Australia Double Taxation Convention prevents double taxation. UK government pensions (civil service, NHS, teachers, armed forces) are taxed only in the UK. Private pensions are taxable only in Australia once you're resident. Your UK rental income is taxable in both countries with credit relief in Australia. Australia's tax year runs July–June, not April–April — your first year involves two overlapping tax systems.

Buying property as a UK national

No restrictions on foreign buyers purchasing established property if you have PR. Temporary visa holders need FIRB (Foreign Investment Review Board) approval and pay an application fee (A$14,100+ depending on value). New-builds don't require FIRB approval. Stamp duty varies by state: NSW 4–5.5%, VIC 5.5%, QLD 3.5%. No foreign-buyer surtax at federal level, but NSW charges an 8% surcharge and VIC charges 8% for foreign buyers without PR. Mortgage rates: 5.5–7% variable. Deposit: 20% to avoid LMI (lenders mortgage insurance).

Common Questions

What visa do Brits need to move to Australia?

Under 35: Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) gives you 1–3 years. After that, the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is points-based — age, education, English, and work experience. Employer sponsorship (Subclass 482) is the other main route. Partner visas exist if you have an Australian partner. There's no 'retirement visa' equivalent to Portugal's D7.

Is my UK state pension frozen in Australia?

Yes. Your UK state pension is paid but frozen at the rate when you leave. No annual increases, no triple lock, no inflation adjustment — ever. Over a 25-year retirement, this can cost £50,000–100,000 in lost uprating. There is no bilateral agreement that fixes this. It's the single biggest financial downside of Australia for British retirees.

How much does it cost to live in Sydney?

Sydney rent averages $2,198/mo for a 1BR. Total monthly expenses for a single person are around $3,198. Melbourne is ~15% cheaper. Perth and Brisbane are cheaper still. Healthcare costs are low once you have Medicare. The zero income tax in the UK doesn't apply here — Australian tax rates are 19–45%.

Can I access Medicare in Australia as a Brit?

Under the UK-Australia Healthcare Agreement, you can access medically necessary treatment during visits. With PR, you get full Medicare access. On temporary visas, you may have limited Medicare access — check your specific visa conditions. Private health insurance is common (A$150–400/month) and gives tax benefits if you earn above A$93k (Medicare Levy Surcharge).
