US Social Security
Under the US-Netherlands treaty (Article 19(4)), Social Security is taxable only in the source country. Your US Social Security stays taxable only in the US — the Netherlands does not tax it. This provision is explicitly protected from the savings clause, so it holds even for US citizens.
US pensions, 401(k)s, and IRAs
Private pensions, 401(k)s, and IRA withdrawals are generally taxable in your country of residence under Article 19. If you live in the Netherlands, Dutch tax applies. The US savings clause still lets the US tax its citizens, so claim the Foreign Tax Credit on Form 1116 to offset Dutch tax paid on the same income.
Medicare reality
Medicare does not cover care in the Netherlands. The good news: Dutch basic health insurance (zorgverzekering) is mandatory, universal, and insurers must accept you regardless of age or health. No one gets turned away.
Private cover at retiree age
