The student permit itself demands you credibly intend to LEAVE after graduating — and student years don't count toward the C permit, so the PR clock only starts when you convert to a work permit. The actual prize is the bridge: graduates of Swiss universities get a 6-month permit to hunt for a job, and employers hiring them into work of 'high scientific or economic interest' skip the labour-market priority test (Art. 21(3) FNIA). Previous residence, family connections, documented long-standing personal links: that's what cantons want to see. There's no published income threshold because the answer is 'enough that the canton never thinks about you again.' Admission is discretionary — the canton decides, then SEM approves. Nobody has a right to retire in Switzerland; some people are permitted to.

Switzerland doesn't sell golden visas — it sells tax rulings with a residence permit attached. You negotiate expenditure-based ('lump-sum') taxation with a canton: instead of declaring income, you're taxed on your living expenses, floored federally at CHF 434,700 of deemed income (indexed; slightly higher from 2026) or 7× your annual rent, whichever is higher. The residence permit rides on Art. 30(1)(b) FNIA — cantons treat their own fiscal interest as an 'important public interest.' Expect an all-in annual tax bill of roughly CHF 150,000–1,000,000 depending on canton. Two traps: any gainful activity in Switzerland voids the regime, and five cantons — including Zurich — abolished lump-sum taxation entirely (ZH, SH, AR, BS, BL). If your plan was a tax deal in Zurich, your plan is actually a tax deal in Zug, Schwyz, or Geneva.

Non-EU hiring runs on a national quota — 8,500 permits per year for the entire country (2026: 4,500 B + 4,000 L) — and your employer must first prove no suitable Swiss or EU/EFTA candidate exists, with the vacancy advertised through the regional employment office. You must qualify as a 'manager, specialist or other qualified worker' (Art. 23 FNIA), and your salary must match what's customary for the location, profession, and sector — there's no fixed number, which means the canton decides whether your offer smells right. Zurich's quota allocation historically runs out before December. This is a visa your employer applies for; your job is to be worth the paperwork.
